Fresno, CA (KFSN) -- For only the second time in Fresno's history a woman has been elected mayor.

Ashley Swearengin defeated Council Member Henry Perea last night by 10 percentage points. The latest Action News/SurveryUSA poll showed Swearengin was supported by both men and women. The final vote count brought her 9,865 more votes than Perea.

Action News Political Analyst Tony Capozzi said electing women in Fresno County has become a trend. "We now have a female Mayor in the City of Fresno. We have a female Sheriff of Fresno County. The District Attorney is a woman and we'll have 3 females on the board of supervisors as of January. It's definitely a victory for women."

Ashley Swearengin, Fresno's new Mayor, and her one-time opponent will serve the people of Fresno together. Henry T. Perea has two years remaining on his term representing the residents in District 7.
